Artistes unite for Labour Day project

TOMORROW, Labour Day, several entertainers including Tony Curtis, Chris Martin, Prestige, Wickerman, and Konshens will be teaming up with residents of Malvern in St Elizabeth to renovate the old community centre and transform it into a basic school.

Project organiser Clive 'Busy' Campbell said since learning that there was no basic school in Malvern, he had to do something about it. He said the matter was brought to his attention by former cricketer-turned-councillor, Darren Powell.

"When Darren Powell played in the One Love Football match in Constant Spring on Ash Wednesday, he brought it to my attention," Campbell said.

Campbell said in the evening the entertainers will play a friendly football match against a St Elizabeth All-Star team.

"Ever since that first game in 1996 at the National Stadium when Brian Lara came and played, I decided that we would have a game like that with those involved in the project playing a match," he said.

"I believe as a Jamaican — who is not rich in pocket, but rich in spirit — we should all give back something and especially to young ones."

Sponsors for the project include Cement Company, Tankwell, and Food for the Poor.
